7 Things We Learned Building a Space for Women Navigating Eldercare

June 15, 20269 min read

What does it actually take to build something new from scratch, in a space that has been largely ignored, and for one of the most underserved groups in America?

That's the question Year One of Living Goldenwell has been answering. This is Part 2 of my Year One reflections, focused on the business: what we've built, what we're proud of, and the seven hard-won lessons that have shaped how we operate. If you haven't read Part 1 on the journey, start there.

What Living Goldenwell Is Building

Living Goldenwell is built around a simple but profound belief: that women navigating eldercare deserve more than information, they deserve transformation.

We're growing a first-of-its-kind premium virtual connection network and learning space for professional and entrepreneurial women who are caring for elderly parents while managing demanding careers and full lives. These are accomplished, resourceful women — executives, entrepreneurs, professionals, mothers, wives, daughters — who are juggling immense responsibility and actively seeking expert guidance they can trust, and a space to navigate the emotional weight of what they're carrying.

Inside Caregiving From The Middle, our community platform, women find both: expert guidance from a vetted slate of specialists spanning geriatrics and senior care, legal and financial planning, long-term care, and women's health, alongside real relationships with other professional women who understand the specific intersection of career, family, and eldercare without needing it explained.

It's the power of women helping women, brought to the eldercare space.

What We're Proud Of

I'm proud of the authentic connections being made and the powerful ecosystem that’s gaining traction. Bringing together women from all over the world to access tools, resources, expert guidance, and relationships that meaningfully transform the eldercare stage of life.

We operate with a steady combination of operational and financial discipline, focused on a member-first approach. I'm not going to use this space to lay out growth stats. What I will say is this: we are focused on serving women who have been invisible in an experience no one prepared them for, and creating the space where comprehensive, curated support changes everything.

Our Signature Framework: The Foundation of Everything We Do

Living Goldenwell is built on a Signature Framework that reflects what we know from research, clinical and professional expertise, and lived experience: that the most effective support addresses the whole woman — her need for knowledge, her need to be understood, her need for a clear path forward, her need for real connection, and her need to sustain her own wellbeing in the process.

Our five pillars create the conditions for the transformation our members experience — from overwhelmed, unsure, and isolated, to grounded, capable, and no longer alone.

1. Education

What it is: The knowledge, skills, and practical tools to navigate every stage of caring for an aging parent — from understanding care options and healthcare systems to managing difficult family conversations, planning for the future, and sustaining your own wellbeing along the way.

Why it matters: The right knowledge is power — and in eldercare, it's also peace of mind. When you have a clear roadmap and practical tools, you stop feeling reactive and start feeling capable. You move from "I don't know what to do" to "Here are my next three steps." You can ask the right questions of doctors, care facilities, attorneys, and family members — and make decisions you feel good about, at every turn.

2. Validation

What it is: The experience of being genuinely seen, heard, and understood by women who truly get it. A space to share openly and authentically, normalize your experience, ask questions without judgment, and feel less alone in one of life's most demanding seasons.

Why it matters: Too many women are absorbing the emotional weight of elder caregiving. Quietly lying awake at 2am with unanswered questions and no one to turn to. That isolation is more than painful; it makes everything harder. When you feel genuinely understood by someone who has lived what you're living, something shifts. When we're connected with ourselves and others, we reduce the intensity of negative emotions, making them easier to manage.

3. Clarity

What it is: Structured guidance, decision support, expert input, and personalized coaching to help you build a comprehensive eldercare plan tailored to your parent's needs and your family's unique situation, so you always know your next step.

Why it matters: Eldercare doesn't come with a manual, and you do not have to figure this out alone. There are moments when what you need most is a clear path forward, not another Google search. Actual, personalized guidance from someone who truly understands what you're navigating. That's what this pillar provides — the clarity and confidence to make decisions you feel good about, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you're not flying blind.

4. Connection

What it is: Real relationships with professional women who understand the specific intersection of career, family, and eldercare — women who are living what you're living, who get it without you having to explain it.

Why it matters: There is something irreplaceable about perspective from someone who has walked this path, or is walking it alongside you right now. Not generic caregiver support, but women who understand what it means to show up fully at work and at your parent's side, to manage family dynamics while managing a team, to grieve and keep going. For many of our members, this is what transforms this season from isolating to meaningful.

5. Reclamation

What it is: The strategies, tools, and self-advocacy skills to reclaim your time, energy, and wellbeing — because the quality of your parent's care is directly connected to the quality of your own.

Why it matters: Living Goldenwell is built around a core belief: your wellbeing is not an afterthought. It is the foundation from which you care for everyone else. This pillar exists because we believe it's possible — even in the thick of eldercare — to design a life where exceptional care for your parent and genuine fulfillment for yourself can co-exist. Reclaiming and protecting your most precious resources — time, energy, and money — is a critical part of transforming your eldercare experience and your daily life.

7 Things We Learned Building a New Business for Women Caring for Elderly Parents

1. Start with a real problem, not a product idea

The most durable businesses are built around genuine pain points that people are actively trying to solve. Before you build anything, you need to be obsessively curious about your customer and committed to meeting their needs at the highest possible level.

2. Revenue is oxygen

It can be tempting to treat early revenue as a milestone to celebrate later. It should instead be treated as a survival signal to pursue immediately. Even imperfect, hard-won early revenue tells you something true about whether people value what you're building — and customers paying you will give you honest feedback in ways that polite conversations never will.

3. Do a few things exceptionally well rather than many things adequately

Focus is one of the most counterintuitive disciplines in business. The temptation to expand — new features, new markets, new customer segments — is constant. But businesses that compound fastest tend to be maniacally focused on a narrow problem until they've truly dominated it, then expand from a position of strength. We're working on this one!

4. Distribution is as important as the product

A great offering with no path to customers fails just as completely as a bad one. From day one, you need to be continually testing and evolving your paths for reaching and acquiring customer or members. Founders who treat brand, marketing, and sales as an afterthought may find that building the offering was the easier half of the job.

5. Resilience is a competitive advantage

Starting a company is a long sequence of things going wrong, interspersed with moments of progress. The psychological and emotional capacity to keep going — to stay rational under stress, to maintain conviction while remaining open to being wrong — is genuinely rare and genuinely valuable.

6. Intellectual honesty is everything

The ability to see your business clearly, update your beliefs when the evidence demands it, and keep your ego from getting in the way of the truth — that, more than any tactical skill, separates founders who figure it out from those who don't.

7. Be honest about who you're actually serving

Mission-driven businesses sometimes develop a kind of paternalism — assuming they know what's best for the people they serve. The best ones build deep, genuine relationships with their communities and treat those communities as partners in defining what success looks like, not just as beneficiaries. This keeps the mission humble and grounded in reality rather than assumptions.
